The psychology of guns: risk, fear, and motivated reasoning
If a gun is returned to the factory as a fire damaged, or blown up firearm, the factory will stamp it as a prefix to their date code with a 4 on the barrel and return it un-repaired. Then if the gun is ever subsequently returned to a warranty center or the factory by ANYONE, they will refuse to work on it as an unsafe firearm. The factory says all barrels are date code stamped, well I have found some that are not, or if they are, are so erratic stamping that trying to decipher them is impossible.

Guns and domestic violence are a lethal combination. Notably, February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month: a time for professionals and the public to reflect on our collective responsibility to minimize the impact of Intimate Partner Violence IPV on teenagers and the generations that will follow. This February the reflection likely included consideration of the role firearms play in teen dating violence, as well as in IPV generally.
The shooter in Florida is described as someone who abused his teenage girlfriend and stalked another teen-aged classmate. Many states do not recognize dating violence in the same way as domestic violence in their criminal and civil codes. However, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and sexual violence within an intimate relationship, are all forms of IPV and can put victims of violence at high risk of harm. Unfortunately, teen victims of violence have very limited knowledge of available options.
For instance, a study showed that teens are not generally aware of what orders of protections are, are less likely to seek law enforcement assistance, and pursue orders when already exposed to an unacceptably high risk of physical violence. Perhaps for all of these reasons, we routinely fail to identify red flags—including a heightened risk for lethal violence by firearms—when we learn about teen dating violence or stalking.
While mass shootings or femicides cannot be reliably predicted, a growing body of research is aiding our ability to identify which individuals present a heightened risk of danger, including for firearm-related violence. The science of identifying and responding to these red flag indicators is becoming increasingly accurate.
Risk prevention begins with identifying people who are threats to themselves or others by considering indicators such as a history of violence toward their intimate or dating partners. Certain measures which account for risk are well known, and others are being tested now. ERPOs are civil court orders which allow families and law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from people at high-risk of committing violence, and are modeled on domestic violence restraining orders.

A few swipes into the popular dating app Bumble, and the diversity of interests is obvious: Users post photos of themselves swinging from trapezes, playing French horns, posing with freshly caught fish and, occasionally, brandishing a handgun or aiming a semiautomatic rifle. But following a string of mass shootings and nationwide calls for gun control in recent weeks, Bumble is setting plans in motion to ban images of firearms for its nearly 30 million users.
The company joins a long list of businesses that have cut ties with the National Rifle Association or sought to clarify their relationship with the industry since a deadly shooting in Florida last month. The new policy, which resembles how Bumble already handles nudity, fake photos, hate speech and other transgressions, will extend to dangerous weapons like knives as well as firearms, she said.

The gun lobby has a new talking point in its same old reckless campaign: allowing students to carry loaded firearms around college campuses, it claims, will prevent sexual assault. But legislators all over the country are introducing bills that would do just that. One in five women will be sexually assaulted while in college, and 32 percent of female students report having been abused by a dating partner.
Guns are the most common weapons used in the murders of intimate partners. And the presence of a gun in a case of domestic violence makes it five times more likely that the victim will be murdered, regardless of who owns the gun. Though some individual victims might believe that they are safer while carrying a gun, the research is clear: arming potential victims is not an effective strategy for preventing sexual or dating violence, and will actually increase the likelihood that victims or other bystanders will be wounded or killed.
Guns on campus will do little to protect potential rape victims or students in abusive relationships, while providing perpetrators the most deadly tool to threaten and hurt victims—and raising the likelihood that rape and abuse will escalate to murder. The United States currently averages 20 mass shootings per year. Researchers from Michigan State University measured the extent to which mass shootings are committed by domestic violence perpetrators, suggesting how firearm restrictions may prevent these tragedies. Under federal law, when people are convicted of domestic violence misdemeanor crimes, they are prohibited from purchasing and possessing guns for the rest of their lives.
However, holes in the system allow potential mass shooters to slip through the cracks. Zeoli and co-author Jennifer Paruk cross-checked four separate mass shooting databases — compiled by Every Town for Gun Safety, USA Today, Gun Violence Archives and Mother Jones — and then used publicly available criminal records to see what other criminal charges the shooters had against them.
